Diary of a Wimpy Kid News

Calling all Diary of a Wimpy Kid fans!!!!  

The publisher of this popular series has announced that book #11 will be released in November 2016.  No word on the title yet, however, the cover art will be released on April 28th.  So we will all have to wait until then to find out more about the book.  Hopefully it will become available in the catalog shortly after that so you can start placing your holds!!!  Learn more about the new book from this March 10, 2016 Publisher's Weekly article.

Elephant and Piggie's New Book

Gerald and Piggie star in their latest book, I Will Take a Nap! by Mo Willems.  Here we find Gerald desperately wanting to take a nap.  He's tired AND cranky.  Just as he tries to lay down and take a nap, Piggie comes along asking Gerald what he's doing.  Gerald explains how tired and cranky he is and that a nap will make him feel so much better.  Piggie thinks it sounds like a good idea.  So Piggie snuggles up to take nap with Gerald.  But Gerald can't nap because Piggie SNORES!  Then the excruciating circumstances start for poor Gerald.  I can't tell you any more because that will give the story away, so you'll need to get your hand on a copy and read it yourself...it's just that good of a book!  I foresee this book growing in popularity and notoriety in the children's literary world.  I see that there's already over 30 holds on the book in the online catalog, so place your holds on the book now before the list gets even longer!  And please, take time for a peaceful nap too!  You deserve it!

Honoring Don Freeman

Don Freeman, the creator and illustrator of the Corduroy books passed away in 1978.  I personally enjoyed the story of Corduroy and his missing button for his overalls as a child.  I felt a very deep and emotional tug at my heart strings as he went around the department store without the button to keep his overalls strap down, the mischief he got into roaming the store, and how the eyes of a young girl made a connection with the little bear.  Spoiler alert: It was such a relief for me when he went home with the girl and got himself a new button.  *Sigh*

It was much to my shagrin to learn about a new book that just came out based on Freeman's artwork that has never been published before.  His wife saved his artwork in hopes that it could be used one day for another book.  That dream resulted in The Day is Waiting by Portland author Linda Zuckerman.  In the book, Freeman's illustrations are varied throughout with the use  of sketches, drawings, and paintings using several types of media as Zuckerman's rhyming text takes the reader on a simple journey to faraway places and explores the world, while reminding readers that wherever we go and whatever they do,  that home will always be waiting there to come back to.  This special story written with such love and caring words, makes a wonderful tribute to honor Freeman and his life's work. 

Beverly Cleary Children's Choice Award Winner Announcement

This year, 40 children at the Tigard Public Library submitted thier vote for their favorite 2015 Beverly Cleary Children's Choice Award book.  The votes were then submitted towads the state-wide tally.  The winning title was Third Grade Angels by Jerry Spinelli.  Congratulations Jerry!

Staff Picks Are Coming to a Library Near You!

A great thing about working at the Tigard Public Library is working with a staff full of readers. Coworkers are always sharing interesting titles with each other.  Now, we want to share them with you!  Beginning today, Wednesday, December 10, find out what books have enthralled, entertained and energized library staff.  Look for the staff picks displays in the Children’s Room and on the second floor near the top of the stairs. Two Hot New Titles!

I'm super excited about two fabulous books I read this week.  Now I know neither of these two books don't need any extra promotion, but for those of you out there who haven't heard the news, I've gotta let you know about them!  The holds lists are growing, so be sure to place your holds now before the wait gets longer!!!

Elephant and Piggie are back in their latest installment in Waiting Is Not Easy!  Piggie is sooooo excited to share a BIG surprise with Gerald.  And of course, Gerald is too excited to wait for the surprise, and keeps tormenting Piggie to give it to him right away.  Piggie insists that Gerald must wait and wait and wait.  After the agonizing wait, Gerald is met with a wonderful surprise that even the reader will be truly surprised!  Want to know what it is?  I can't tell you.  You must wait!  And believe me, it is worth the wait!  All of us in Youth Services are super excited about this book!  Miss Jaime says, "It was deliciously awesome.  Just when I thought the Elephant and Piggie books couldn't get any better, they did!" This title will be a perfect read for those of you out there who have kiddos who need a little encouragement in learning the art of patience. 

The other awesome book I read this week was book 9 of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series.  We all know that Greg Heffley needs no introduction as he's wiggled his way into the hearts of many elementary school readers.  In Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul, Mom Susan insists that the family take a road trip for everyone to spend some quality bonding time together.  While the trip starts off with good intentions, it ends up with one problem after another.  Bad gas stations, unbearable hotel rooms, seagulls, lost keys, a piglet, no cash, and a trip to the vet weren't what the Heffley family had in mind, but one page after another is guaranteed for some belly bursting out-loud laughs!  I'm surprised no one around me complained about my laughing while I was reading...it was just that funny!

2014 State Children's Choice Awards Announced!

The 2014 Oregon Reader's Choice Award and Beverly Cleary Children's Choice Awards have been announced!!!

In it's 4th year, the Oregon Reader's Choice Award (ORCA) is sponsored by the Children's Services Division and Oregon Young Adult Network, both divisions of the Oregon Library Association, the Oregon Association for School Libraries, the Oregon Reading Association, and the Pacific Northwest Booksellers Association.  2635 students from across the state participated in the award in their grade division and voted for their favorite.  The results are:

Upper Elementary (Junior) Division:

High school (Senior) Division:
Divergent by Veronica Roth


Now in it's 12th year, the 2014 Beverly Cleary Children's Choice Award goes to 8 Class Pets = 1 Squirrel (Divided by) 1 Dog = Chaos by Vivian Vande Velde.  The award is sponsored by the Oregon Association for School Libraries and is named after long-time Oregon resident and beloved author, Beverly Cleary.  The award is geared towards books at a 2nd and 3rd grade reading level.

Younger Judy Moody and Hank Zipzer

For those of you who are familiar with the Judy Moody and Hank Zipzer series of books for young to middle elementary school students, there are two new early reader series of books for the beginner reader crowd based on these two popular characters.. 

Let me introduce you to Judy Moody and Friends, aimed at ages 4 to 6.  These books will expand more on some of Judy's buddies mentioned in the chapter books.  The first two books in the series, Rocky Zang in The Amazing Mr. Magic and Jessica Finch in Pig Trouble will be released on February 11th.  More books will be released in September.

And for Hank Zipzer, he will travel back to second grade before his dyslexia is diagnosed in his new beginner reader series called Here's Hank.  Books to be released on February 8th include Bookmarks are People Too! and A Short Tale About a Long Dog.

I'm really looking forward to see how these chapter books transpose into beginner reader books. I hope your reader is too!

Kid Lit Celebrations!

2013 is an important year as it marks the anniversary of many very important books that have made a huge impact in the world of children's literature.  Here's some books that I bet you didn't know were celebrating some big milestones this year:

• It's the 15th anniversary of the U.S. publication of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone (this celebrates the first publication of the British edition)
• Patricia Polacco is celebrating the 25^th Anniversary of The Keeping Quilt
• Roald Dahl’s darling 5-year-old genius Matilda  is marking her 25^th anniversary
• Celebrating its golden 50th anniversary this year is Richard Scarry’s Best Word Book Ever
• Also marking its 50th anniversary this year is Maurice Sendak’s Where the Wild Things Are which won the 1964 Caldecott Medal.
• Annother golden anniversary goes to Leo Lionni’s beloved Swimmy which received a 1964 Caldecott Honor Award
• It's the 70^th anniversary of The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry
• And finally, Kenneth Grahame’s The Reluctant Dragon will be celebrating its 75th anniversary

Wimpy Kid 8 is in Your Near Future

Diary of a Wimpy Kid book #8 will be released in November (place your holds now before the waiting list gets longer!).  But for now, the title and color of the book have been a well kept secret.  On 8-8-13 the color of the book will be revealed!  While you wait, go to http://www.wimpykid.com/ to shake the crystal ball to see what Greg Heffley has revealed for the future.  Abrams Books, the publisher is trying to get 800,000 shakes (or clicks) on the crystal ball before August 8, 2013, so let your Wimpy Kid fan shake that ball!

2013 Beverly Cleary Childen's Choice Award Announced

The 2013 Beverly Cleary Children's Choice Award winner has been announced!  The winning book is Lulu and the Brontosaurus by Judith Viorst.  This is the story about Lulu and how her parents refuse to give in when she demands a brontosaurus for her birthday.  So she sets out into the woods to find her own dinosaur.  But when Lulu finds a  brontosaurus, she learns that her potential pet has other intentions.

School children all over Oregon voted for their favorite book from a list of six suggested books.  The books nomiated for the award are targeted to the interests and reading level of second and third graders.  The award was created by and sponsored by the Oregon Association of School Libraries and is named after local children's author, Beverly Cleary. 

School Lunch Super Hero Day!

Does your child visit the school cafeteria during lunch while at school?  According to this article from School Library Journal, May 3 will now be known as “School Lunch Superhero Day,” a day for kids to show their appreciation for all of their cafeteria workers, who often receive little or no recognition or are even sometimes maligned in popular culture.  This special day is based on the popular Lunch Lady series of graphic novels by Jarrett J. Krosoczka.  Sadly, the book series will end this December, but the legacy of the Lunch Lady will still live on!  To find ways to celerate, visit the School Lunch Superhero Day website!

Origami Yoda Book News

I've got some exciting news for Origami Yoda fans!  The Amulet Books imprnt at Abrams Books has announced in this article from Publisher's Weekly, that the fourth book in Tom Angleberger’s Origami Yoda Series, The Surprise Attack of Jabba the Puppett will go on sale August 6th.  In the book, the kids at McQuarrie Middle School form a rebel alliance to fight back against cuts in art and music classes, as well as a new test prep program.  Excited to read the new book?  Well, don't worry, as the library will be ordering lots of copies this summer.  Be sure to check the catalog this summer to place your hold for the book at that time.

 

Reading Rainbow 2.0

LeVar Burton is taking Reading Rainbow, the classic 80's hit TV show about books and reading to the next level: the ipad.  In this article interview with School Library Journal, Burton explains the birth of Reading Rainbow and the technology of the time, television, and it's leap to new heights using today's technology of downloadable apps.  Don't have an ipad?  No worries, we still have books and DVD's from the series here at the library!

Wimpy Kid #8 is coming!

News Flash!!!  I just learned that A Diary of a Wimpy Kid Book #8 will be publihsed this coming November!  I don't know the title of it yet, but I am keeping my eyes and ears peeled in the mean time!
