Thank You for your Mitten Tree Donations!

Throughout the frosty cold month of December, Library patrons generously decorated the Mitten Tree with over 260 sixty hats, scarves and gloves! 

The warm and toasty items were delivered to the Good Neighbor Center just before the last winter snow and ice storm.

Many thanks to everyone who participated in the 20th annual Mitten Tree donation program!

Throughout the month of December, bring new hats, scarves and gloves to decorate the branches of our 20th annual Mitten Tree located in the Library Puett Room. 
The Good Neighbor Center will give them to families who are experiencing homelessness in Washington County.

PUPPET PLAY TIME!

 Let you imagination RUN WILD with a puppet from the library!

Thanks to the continued and generous support from the Friends of Tigard Public Library, we now have a new, exciting assortment of puppets available for check-out!

Our Puppet collection contains a fabulous assortment of all shapes and sizes sure to delight and inspire imaginary adventures and conversations galore.

The puppet collection is quite durable and will last through many fun adventures.  Help us keep them looking fresh by following the guidelines below:

If you puppet gets messy, please bring it back to the library with a note.

Please do not put your puppet in the washing machine or dryer.  They can't swim.  Thanks!

Pacific Northwest Exhibit

Looking for special local history outing for the family?  The Oregon State Library is opened a new exhibit called “The Early Exploration of the Pacific Northwest, 1778 – 1843.” Using books from the State Library’s Special Collections this exhibit highlights many early expeditions in the Pacific Northwest, starting with the 1778 Oregon Coast explorations by James Cook of England to the United States Exploring Expedition led by Charles Wilkes in 1843. The exhibit will display many other key materials from persons and places such as Robert Gray, George Vancouver, Lewis and Clark, and Astoria.

Oregon State Library’s Special Collections houses manuscripts, photographs, older Oregon documents, Oregon maps, and books and periodicals on numerous Oregon-related topics. Many items in the collection require special handling or protection because they are rare or fragile. Apart from Special Collections, the State Library has an extensive collection of materials on Oregon-related topics including public documents from Oregon government agencies. The Oregon Documents Depository Program ensures continuing access to public documents, as state agencies are required by statute to provide the State Library with copies of their public documents for distribution.

The exhibit is located in the 2nd floor lobby of the State Library, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. The Oregon State Library is located at 250 Winter St. NE, Salem, OR 97301-3950

Learn More About Homeschooling in Oregon

Do you want to know more about homeschooling?  Join us for a FREE presentation by the Oregon Home Education Network, featuring a panel of experienced homeschoolers.  Panelists will provide an overview of homeschooling in Oregon and answer questions.  Participants will receive a handout with a list of homeschooling resources.  Join us in the Puett Room on Tuesday October 23rd from 7 to 8:30 p.m.  This event is open to adults only.

Sidewalk Surveys

Do you walk to the library? Did you know that the City would like to add some sidewalks to make the route safer for neighborhood walkers? To help fund the sidewalk project they need help knowing how many people walk to the library. Find out more about the project here and stop by the library June 7, 8, 9 from 5-7 p.m., or June 11 from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. or June 12 from noon-2 p.m. to take a quick survey.

Mittens for All

The Mitten Tree is looking festive in the Puett Room (otherwise known as the story time room!). Feel free to stop by any time to add your donations of new mittens, scarves and other warm stuff to decorate our tree. All of your gifts will go to the Good Neighbor Center to help homeless families in Washington County.

Spooky Stuff

Looking for some spooky fun in Tigard this weekend? Get in the spirit with a few spine-tingling tales from the display in the Children's Room of the library (in the Fiction section). Find just the right story to share with the perfect amount of scare.

Stop by the Tigard Farmer's Market on Sunday, Oct. 31 from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m., for the final day of the market and a special seasonal celebration. Bring bags for your treats, meet Gentle Biff the Clown and enjoy the market.

Tigard High will be hosting their annual Halloween Trick or Treat Rooms on Sunday, October 31 from 3 to 5 pm. There is no cost but they are asking for a donation of canned food.

When You Need a Hand

Need help finding medical or dental assistance? Or legal resources? How about access to fax machine to submit an application? All of this and more is available free of charge through the Tigard Tualatin Family Resource Center. Located in a portable building on the campus of Tigard High School, staff at the center are prepared to help connect you to the help you need in the community. Adult English classes and cooking classes are even available through the center. Check out their webpage for more information or stop by their office Monday through Thursday from 9 am to12 pm and from 1 pm to 3 pm.

Connecting Families with Child Care

Going back to work and need child care? Did you know that there is a free service available that helps you find child care that's just right for your family? 

Community Action's Child Care Resource & Referral (CCR&R) program offers free child care referrals. Just fill out a request form and their specialist will get work foryou. They also have resources on choosing quality child care and findng subisdy support. Last year they helped over 1,000 families find child care.

CCR&R supports providers as well, offering training opportunities in education, business and other skill development areas.
