Kitchen Café Play

Stop by the Puett Room Monday February 20 through Friday, February 24 during story time break and use your imagination! From 10 a.m.-3 p.m. each day explore our cardboard kitchen and pantry stuffed with toy pots,pans and food.  Cook fabulous meals and make your own recipe cards.  Everyone can become a famous chef, just stir your imagination into the mix and serve up something marvelous.  Don't forget to check out our great selection of cookbooks before you go home! 

"I Love You, Valentine!" Party

All ages are invited to drop on by the Puett Room Sunday, February 12 any time between 1:30-2:30 pm. Create beautiful, sparkling treasures to share with that special someone on Valentine’s Day while you enjoy tasty treats everyone is sure to love.  All ages are welcome!

Thank You for your Mitten Tree Donations!

Throughout the frosty cold month of December, Library patrons generously decorated the Mitten Tree with over 260 sixty hats, scarves and gloves! 

The warm and toasty items were delivered to the Good Neighbor Center just before the last winter snow and ice storm.

Many thanks to everyone who participated in the 20th annual Mitten Tree donation program!  

Motion Magic!

Mo Mo the bookworm clown is trying to learn how to lead a happy and healthy life! Join us for this hilarious physical comedy show that combines juggling, illusion, and acrobatics performed by Motion Magic!    All ages are welcome to attend on Tuesday January 10, 2017 at 6:30 p.m. in the Burgess Community Room.

Looking for something to do during the break? Something festive and fun and relaxing and entertaining for the whole family ? We got you covered. Come on down to the Burgess Community Room on Friday, December 30 from 3-5 p.m., featuring Kubo and the Two Strings (PG) on the big screen. We'll also welcome the new year with Japanese snacks, crafts and activities. Be there!

I Spy Fly Guy!

Remember when we had the Frog Prince and Pete the Cat hidden in the children's room in the past?  This winter break we have Fly Guy hiding out in the children's room!  From December 17-31, when you come to the library, look around the children's room and see if you can spy where Fly Guy is hiding.  Then check to see what he's reading.  Come to the children's desk and let us know where you found him and what book he is reading that day.  Then claim a little prize!  He'll be in a new hiding spot each day and reading a different book too, so be sure to hunt for him each time you visit until the end of the year!

December Puppet Show!

Join us for our next Super Tuesday event where Penny's Puppets will present The Gingerbread Man on December 13 at 6:30 p.m. in the Burgess Community Room.  Watch and be entertained as Granny gets lonely and decides to make a gingerbread man from a magical cookie recipe.  But then, oops!  She leaves him in the oven too long and a fun adventure begins!  All ages are welcome to attend this mini-musical modern-day twist on an endearing folktale.

Building a Home Library

Needing some gift giving suggestions this season?  Trying to build a home library for your child?  Not sure what titles to include?  The Association for Library Service to Children in cooperation with the Children's Book Council have collaborated to create lists that will prove to be very helpful in selecting book titles for the young ones in your life that are proven to be high quality literature.  Each of their "Building a Home Library" bibliographies are age specific that will be developmentally appropriate to that age group.  The two-aged book lists (in PDF format) include:

For Children Ages 0-3
For Children Ages 4-7
For Children Ages 8-11
For Children Ages 12-14

Redeem Your WCCLS Passports!

Now is the time to redeem your WCCLS Passport to be entered into the countu drawing for amazing prizes!  Anytime during December 1-16, 2016, please present your WCCLS Passport at the Children's or Adult Reference desk inside the library.  Show the librarian how many libraries you had stamp your passport and earn a drawing slip for each stamped page.  Fill out the drawing slip(s) and we'll add them to the county wide prize drawing!  Passport random drawing prizes include: An Apple iPad Air 2, Classic Film Series tickets to the Sherwood Center for the Arts, Family Matinee Series tickets to the Sherwood Center for the Arts, a Tualatin Hills Parks and Recreation Conestoga Party (a kids party for 10), passes to the Pittock Mansion, Wine Tasting  for two to Blooming Hill Vineyard and WCCLS Book Bag with 40th Anniversary swag.  For more information, visit https://www.wccls.org/wccls40.  The prize drawing will be held at the WCCLS headquarters office in Hillsboro on December 20th.

Mitten Tree

Throughout the month of December, bring new hats, scarves and gloves to decorate the branches of our 20th annual Mitten Tree located in the Library Puett Room.

WCCLS 40th Anniversary News

In case you haven't heard, Washington County Cooperative Library Services is celebrating its 40th Anniversary this year!  To celebrate this major milestone, Library Passports have been created for Washington County residents so they can visit libraries across the county and get their passport stamped.  For each library you visit and get a stamp, it makes you eligible to enter a prize drawing full of really nice items such as...an Apple iPad Air 2, film tickets to the Sherwood Center for the Arts, passes to the Pittock Mansion, a wine tasting, and plus others!  Passports can be stamped from now until December 16, 2017.

Can't make it to multiple libraries?  That's OK too.  Mascots from each Washington County library got together and toured multiple libraries within the cooperative.  They had their photos taken which was a lot of fun for them (and us) which resulted in this slideshow of their adventures.

Want to get in on some more fun?  Tonight, the library is hosting a musical concert for adults.  Kora: Music of West Africa.  Sean Gaskell will give a performance and educational demonstration on the kora, an ancient 21-stringed harp from West Africa. He will feature traditional songs that are the heart and soul of the kora's musical repertoire in addition to some of his own personal compositions.  The concert will be held in the Burgess Community Room at 7:00 p.m.

Life-Sized Games

Missed the last Life-Sized Candyland program? You needn't fret, because it's back, bigger and better than before for International Games Day! Not only will you have the chance to be the playing piece on a giant Candyland game board, but you can also try your hand at Battleship, Hungry Hungry Hippos and Connect Four all in the large scale. And while you're waiting for your turn in the big leagues, play some good ol' regular-sized games.

Fantastic Beasts & Where to Find Them Release Party

Calling Harry Potter Fans Ages 10 and Up!

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them will hie the movie theaters in November, and we're having a party to celebrate its release.  Test your Hogwarts knowledge in our trivia game while enjoying wizardly snacks and creating beastly crafts.  Be sure to dress in costume so you can enter the costume contest for a prize!

Encouraging the doodling in your pre-writer

Do you have an older sibling who can read and write along with a younger sibling who wishes they could read and write like the older one?  Here's the perfect picture book about a younger sibling who wished he would write words  and a story just like his older sibling.  In A Squiggly Story by Andrew Larsen and Mike Lowery (Kids Can Press, 2016), the little brother doesn't know how to spell, create words, or write a story.  BUT his older sister encourages him with how EASY it is by just writing one letter and a bunch of scribbles and doodles.  She then walks him through the process of a story arc, with the beginning, middle, and end.  While brother doesn't fill out an entire sheet of paper full of words, it is OK, because he "wrote" it in such a way that he could tell the story and it makes sense to him.  He then goes on to share his story at school during show-and-tell.  This picture book is spot-on to encourage writing and creativity in emergent writers and to help teach what words, writing, and print is.  And Watch the book trailer on youtube to get a sneak peek of what's inside!

November is Picture Book Month!

November is Picture Book Month! Picture Book Month is an international literacy initiative that celebrates the print picture book during the month of November each year. To celebrate, please stop by the children's room at the library and check out our display of recommended picture books from the Youth Services Staff.  So take a peek and see what your favorite librarian's favorite picture books are!  Please feel free to grab any of the books from the display, check them out, and read them to your youngster!  Share the love of a picture book today!

Magic Show!

Come one, come all, to a magic show filled with wonder, laughs, music, and authentic prestidigitation! You won't believe your eyes as Alexander, Master of Marvels, makes objects appear, vanish, then reappear!
