Adults love teen lit too!
August 24 has almost arrived, and with it Mockingjay, the third and final installment of the Hunger Games trilogy. Are you one of the 530 library patrons that have already placed their holds? Are you so overcome with excitement you can barely function? Well, you're not the only one. According to this New York Times article, lots of very smart grown ups love reading teen lit. Well, any librarian coulda' told you that. As the article states, “A lot of adult literature is all art and no heart...There’s a freshness [in teen lit]; it’s engaging. Y.A. authors aren’t writing about middle-aged anomie or disappointed people.”

Good Deeds and Vocabulary
Fans of good deeds and vocabulary can help the Oxford Dictionaries Save the Words. On the interactive site you can browse through oft-forgotten words. Find a word you really like and pledge to "save" it by using it as often as you can.
For example, I found a nidifice in my wisteria yesterday. What word will you save from oblivion?

One Crazy Summer
Sometimes you read a book that's just wonderful. It breaks your heart, makes you smile and teaches you a little something. Granted, I'm a fan of most books, so it takes a zinger to really impress me. Enter One Crazy Summer by Rita Williams-Garcia.
With lyrical prose that flows and jives, Williams-Garcia shows the strength and heartache of Delphine and her two little sisters sent to spend a summer month with the mother who abandoned them. The tension from the family dynamic is echoed in the tension of times, with the girls spending their days at a Black Panther summer camp. For all of the hardships, this book still manages to be upbeat. This beautiful read set in a rarely written about time and place is one to read along with your young reader.
